Lapti (<<Лапти>>) are shoes woven from tree fiber. Peasants throughout the world have made shoes woven from tree fiber. Why tree fiber? Tree fiber is cheap (free), as trees are everywhere (with luck), and little effort is required with little expertice to create these inexpensive shoes, used when it is not wet winter. Baste shoes were (are) used in Russia, China, Korea, Japan, etc. Laugh at them? Think twice as you buy expensive sandles.
