Controlled illumination of the stage was a major objective. Use of "girandoles"
(illuminating earrings) has been discussed ("clothing"). Candelabres or table
lamps were also used (along with wall sconces). Candelabras were illuminated with
gold guilding to reflect light. Sometimes girandoles were used to provide further
relected light. In addition, candles could be part of the candelabras to provide
additional light sources. If the location were subject to draughts of air,
protective glass shields could be used. 1
