A hairstyle that referred to the period of the French Directory
during the French Revolution became popular in England c. 1810. This
hairstyle had several names:
à la victime
à la Guillotine
à la Titus
à la Brutus
à la Caracalla
After the French Revolution, perukes reminded too much of the
aristocracy, and were abandoned, replaced by very short hairstyles.
Short at the front, the sides, and the back of the head. Three
examples follow.
