There are numerous reasons why people engage in scientific research. A major reason is intellectual curiosity. However, many researchers are also very interested in doing work that will benefit mankind. While wishing to benefit mankind might appear to be very idealistic, it is better to contribute positively, than negatively or simply to seek self-centered gratification. Dr. Korman, as well as Dr. Esther Lederberg were both "idealistic" in this way: wanting to help people. Ruth Korman's family wished to benefit people by establishing a school to help those students in need, because they knew that this was Ruth Korman's philosophy in life: to help others.
